Origins:
Hip hop Ties back to the African culture in many ways. The African culture has played a huge influence on American Dance today primarily in hip hop. For instance in tribal dances people would loose themselves in the music and the beat. It would put them into a trance and have them sort of hypnotized.
Now Hip Hop wasn't really derived from any other form of music other then African music. However it did spark some new genres. Genres such as Rap and Crunk. Crunk is unique because it has more of a club beat and it's lyrics refrain from being a talking poetic like structure and instead it is more repetitive. Rap is unique in a way where it speaks in a poetic fashion and typically speaks about life. So from hip hop we have received two great forms of music that is widely listened to today.
Song name:When I'm gone
Sung by: Eminem
Released in: 2005
Genre: Rap
Instruments: violin, wind chimes of some sort, maracas.
I notice that this hip hop/ rap song uses the violin when usually they use technology to make the beat but this song is unique. I also noticed some syncopation in there too which is how it ties back to African American History. Now this song is uses a ton of emotion. Eminem is singing about his daughter and it has a really deep background. He is an artist in the way he writes his music.
Song name: Drop the world
Sung by: Lil-wayne
Released in: 2009
Genre: Rap/ Crunk
Instruments: some sort of hollow instrument (to make the clacking sound), xylophone (opening), flute, and maybe drums.
This song is an intense and strong song. It uses emotion to make the song have some greater meaning and to make the song more intense. Great song! This shows some great polyrythm and really makes someone want to get up and go crazy. Shows relation to African History because as they would dance around the fire they would lose themselves in the beat and the music that was coming from the drums. So this song shows strong relation in, it makes you want to get up and dance and kind of feel the music.
Song name: Fight the power
Sung by: Public Enemy
Released in: 1989
Genre: Hip Hop
Instruments: unknown
This song has a nice smooth grove and a hip hop flow that makes a person want to get on the floor and show off their crazy moves. The lyrics speak to the African race because it is talking about fighting the power (police, segregation, racism). There are several rhythms going on at the same time to create a diverse and catchy beat and this is how it ties back to African American History. In the past they would use drums and create beats and make magic with them. The tribe would find them selves dancing around the fire and having a good time and that is what this songs feel is like. This song also shows strong polyrhythm! It is clear that there are two or more beats going on to make a great SINGLE beat to get you moving.
In the 2000 census it was reported that there was 12.9 percent of the population was black however, 12.2 percent of that reported that there only race was black. Which means that .07 of the original 12.9 is black and another race. For the age groups that are between 0-14 it was found more common in black male and females in the black population. As they became older and reached ages of 65 and over women showed a bigger population then the men. Also during the age range of 30-44 it was found that total population of black males was lower then total population and black females was higher then total population. During the older ages around the age of 65 7 percent of the black race was female and 7 percent was male which is unique because through the age group of 0-14 it shows more males then females. Also in the 2000 census the education was much more strenuous and more difficult and it kind of shows because only 29.8 percent completed high school. Most people that went on to college had some sort of degree to go home with at the end of the day which is pretty darn close to the number of people that finished high school. African Americans still were economically in the dumps compared to other social classes but was still increasing.
This is the a style of dance called jerkin'. It has been a dance craze since 2008 and a group by the "New Boyz" created the song your a jerk that put the dance move to over drive and opened it up to the whole country.
Move: Krumping
Krumping is realling a unique form of hip hop dance because it is expressive and is shown with exposive and energetic movements that can tell a story or just show off. It was originated in 1990 in California and one other unique thing about this form of hip hop dance is that it is very rarely choreographed and is usually freestyle.
Move: Pop lock & drop it
It was originated in the 1970's in Fresno California. This technique uses sharp and quick jerk like motions of the body to produce a jerking like motion and people usually when dancing in this form tell a story by using popping to make normal actions into the new popping form.
